This weekend is shaping up as a classic battle between two films aiming at radically different target markets. You know what they are, and you know which one you want to see.
The hard-core action film is Mad Max: Fury Road (98% positive reviews, rated R without nudity, 3700 theaters).
The film for chicks and wimps and families is Pitch Perfect 2 (68% positive reviews, 3400 theaters, PG-13).
They are likely to occupy the top two spots in this weekend's box office derby, with Pitch Perfect a slight favorite because of Mad Max's family-unfriendly R rating. Pitch Perfect is expected to pull in just north of fifty mill, Mad Max just south.
The Avengers will take in another $30 million or so, which will easily take third place (or higher if one of the others falters).
No other film will come remotely close to those three. The others will fail to reach double figures.
