There was nothing very interesting in the early games:
#8 Notre Dame beat #14 Georgia Tech. The oddsmakers had The Fightin' Irish as slight underdogs (2 1/2), but I was skeptical about Notre Dame losing in South Bend, and I'm thinking the bookies probably took a beating on that one, because the Irish have a massive nationwide base, and their fans probably jumped all over that spread. The late games, however, made the entire day worth following:
That Missouri-Connecticut game (final score: nine to six) was one sorry and boring excuse for big-time football.
Mighty #2 Alabama lost at home, and their vaunted defense allowed 43 points to Ole Miss.Weird stat o' the day:
#6 USC was upset in their conference opener against Stanford. Despite this victory, I don't expect Stanford to be in the playoff picture. They already have a loss to Northwestern, and they play a killer schedule of rated conference opponents in the Pac-12 (Oregon, UCLA, Arizona, e.g.), capped by a final game against Notre Dame in South Bend.
Respect to the #19 BYU Cougars, who almost pulled off a third consecutive miracle. They went into the fourth quarter with a seven-point lead over #10 UCLA, but could not quite hold on. Final score 24-23.
Arizona scored 35 in the second period against Northern Arizona.
The Arizona Wildcats opted to start the season with not one, not two, but three patsies. Well, at least they beat all three, and leapt into the top twenty, but it's going to get much tougher from here. I'll be mighty surprised if they finish better than 8-4.
