Nobody in the world of baseball ever brought us more joy. He was a character who uttered - or was credited with - memorable phrases. He was unique and lovable - and wonderful. Many of us feel like we've lost a member of the family.
And what's more, you could argue that he was the most successful player in baseball history. As Casey Stengel said "Mr. Berra is a very strange fellow of very remarkable abilities." From 1947 to 1963, his Yankees won 14 pennants in 17 years, losing only in 1948, 1954 and 1959. (And they had great teams in 1948 and 1954 - .610 and .669 respectively, but the Indians really soared in those years.)
From 1947 to 1961, Yogi received MVP ballots each year. In the seven-year stretch from 1950 to 1956, he never finished lower than fourth, and won three times. His teammate, the great Mickey Mantle, who became a regular in 1952, pulled more votes than Yogi only once in that stretch - and he needed a triple crown to do it.
Yogi once allegedly said "It ain’t over ’til it’s over," but he was wrong. It's over, but it still ain't over. He'll always be with us.
