He did get the no-hitter. Earlier this year, he lost a perfect game with a HBP in the 9th. As one reader pointed out to me, those were the only baserunners in each game, so he came within an error and a HBP of two perfect games in a single season.
No pitcher has thrown two no-hitters in the same regular season since Nolan Ryan in 1973. The only other pitchers to pull it off were: Virgil Trucks (1952), Allie Reynolds (1951) and Johnny Vander Meer (1938). Oddly enough, with the notable exception of Ryan, that is a list of pitchers who were good, not great. Reynolds was the best of the group at 182-107 with great teams behind him. Trucks was 177-138. Vander Meer didn't even finish with a winning record at 119-121. Vander Meer was 23 when he threw his back-to-back gems, but had control problems (he walked eight in one of his no-hitters) and was back in the minors toiling at Indianapolis just two years later. He finally settled into a permanent spot in Cincy's rotation for about a decade, but those control problems never really went away. He would lead the NL in walks in 1943 and 1948.
Roy Halladay had two no-hitters in 2010, but one of them was in the post-season.

Max Scherzer loses a perfect game on an error
This link is about his first no-hitter in June. The no-no today was spoiled by an error in the 7th, but Scherzer still didn't walk anyone.
ReplyDeleteSo he was a HBP and an error from throwing two perfect games in one year.
