#2 TCU and #4 Michigan State barely survived against unranked opponents. I think TCU will drop to #3 after this week. Michigan State may or may not drop again. #5 Utah won a battle of undefeated teams against Cal, so they might move into the four spot. Michigan State's ranking at this moment is really not significant. What matters is how they perform against Michigan next week and Ohio State on November 21. They are on the road in both games, and I believe will be underdogs both times.
When Oklahoma visits Texas, it's always a monumental weekend in Austin, but the 6th Street celebrations went on longer than usual this year because the underperforming Longhorns finally came to life and gave #10 Oklahoma a smackdown. It returned at least a soupcon of respectability to a Horns team which had been battered by their previous Top 20 opponents, Notre Dame (38-3) and TCU (50-7).
As several of you told me last week, Northwestern was not for real. They took their undefeated record and their national-best defense to Michigan, where they learned how the big boys do it in a 38-0 loss. Michigan has not allowed a point in their last three games, has allowed only 14 points in their last five games, and is now ranked #1 in the nation in defense, having allowed only 6.3 per game. (Boston College is second at 7.2, but with a 3-3 record. They only allowed three this week - but still lost!!)
I guess you already heard that highly touted #17 USC lost Thursday night. They had been ranked as high as #6 earlier in the season. They play a ridiculously hard schedule, which means they could still creep up the rankings despite their two losses. At the very least, they can be major spoilers. They play Notre Dame and Utah (currently ranked #15 and #5) the next two weeks, with Cal, Oregon and UCLA still to come. By the way, Oregon lost yet again this week, dropping them to 3-3.
I believe you'll see Baylor advancing to #2 after their merciless shellacking of Kansas, and the Bears may even get substantial support for the #1 spot. (They got ten votes last week.) Baylor's offense is averaging an incredible 64 points per game, stemming from more than 700 yards of total offense per game, balanced about evenly between passing and rushing.
