This is really nothing new.
When I moved to Norway from Texas in the early 90s, there was a hilarious commercial on TV. I don't remember the point, but the commercial started like this:
Various Americans are in a tour bus in Norway. Of course, all the women have big hair and all the men are wearing string ties and cowboy hats. The Norwegian guide points out the Munch Museum and Frogner Park and other such Scandinavian attractions, and there is minimal reaction from the Americans. Then the guide just mentions, "and there's a 7-Eleven," and the crowd goes crazy, popping champagne corks, dancing in the bus, firing six-guns in the air, etc.
For most of the world, their picture of America is California. (Thanks, Baywatch.) In Norway, however, their image of Americans consists of stereotyped Texans. (Thanks, J.R.)
