Ranking The 50 Greatest College Football Players Of All Time

Ranking The 50 Greatest College Football Players Of All Time

Quick summary:

Herschel Walker - best career

Roger Staubach - best QB

Dick Butkus - best defensive player

Randy Moss - best wide receiver

Barry Sanders - best single year. I have to elaborate just a bit on Barry Sanders' 1988 season at Oklahoma State. He averaged about 240 yards rushing (7.6 per carry) and three and a half touchdowns per game. He also caught passes, ran back punts, and ran back kickoffs, bringing his personal average to about 300 yards per game. In his bowl game, he led his team to a 62-14 victory when he ran for 222 yards and five TDs in the first three quarters, and even completed a pass in his spare time. Coach gave him the rest of the night off. That whole game is on YouTube.

That happened in his junior year.

Before that, Sanders was the back-up running back, although he did lead the nation in kickoff returns one year at 31.6 yards per play.

After that, he rushed for 1470 yards (5.3 per carry) as an NFL rookie, a couple hundred more yards than his former Oklahoma State teammate Thurman Thomas, the talented guy who kept Sanders from being a starter before his junior year.
