Yes, it is real, brought back to life again in a Reddit post. A paparazzo climbed the 8-foot wall around the Pitt/Aniston place in Malibu and snapped them sunbathing on their own property. As a result of this photo and others, Aniston received more than half a million dollars in her lawsuits against various photographers and magazines.
Here is the exact chronology:
In April, 1999, the picture was published by Daily Sport (England) and Eva Tremila (Italy). By the end of that month, it was on the internet. At that time it was widely misreported that the picture had been taken in Mexico. In late May it appeared in the French tabloid Voici. Celebrity Skin featured it in the September issue and High Society printed it in December.
The chronology is critically important because Aniston sued the American magazines for several reasons, including invasion of privacy. The judge specifically dismissed the invasion of privacy portion of the claim because the photo had previously appeared in European magazines long before Celebrity Skin and High Society published it.
Aniston settled her suit against the American magazines in July of 2002.
In 2003, she settled with paparazzo/entrepreneur Francois Navarre for $550,000. He claims that he bought and distributed the picture, but is not the one who climbed the wall and trespassed to take it. That other man, if in fact he exists, has not been identified.
