Somehow my birth town of Rochester, NY made the list along with all the usual suspects like Portland, Seattle and San Francisco. Heaven knows why. It seems to me that my former home of Austin, Texas is a lot hipper, but did not make the list. So it goes.
Rochester does have a vibrant music scene because of the famous Eastman School, but the only really "hip" thing I can think of is the famous House of Guitars, which really is like a little displaced piece of San Francisco, sort of a music-oriented East Coast version of the City Lights bookstore.
