Newspapers are sucking because of Craig Newmark!
"According to one study, Craigslist, where ads are mostly free, saved classified-ad customers $5 billion during 2000-2007. There’s another way of looking at that number, of course—that Craigslist 'took' $5 billion in revenue from newspapers. But that analysis makes sense only if you think newspapers had some divine right to collect monopoly rents from their classified customers forever."
Sure, Craigslist hurt the classified business, but if Craigslist destroys your economic model, you had a mighty vulnerable model to begin with, and one that had absolutely no relationship to what you considered to be your primary purpose (journalism). Instead of whining, create another model, because that one is never coming back to health, just as the nightly network news is never going to return to Cronkite numbers.
