OK, that sounds funny, but I have to admit I don't find this that weird. In fact, it makes perfect sense to me. I suppose he's mobbed by paparazzi if he steps into a public space or even into a spot visible from a public space, so he is creating a way to go from one house to another without entering the street, or even the yard. In addition, if he can go from house to house by tunnel, the paparazzi will have no idea which house he's in, enabling him to get out with less hassle on those occasions when he wants to slip away.
