The one thing I believe in Cohen's narrative is that he was never reimbursed by Trump, The Trump Organization, or the Trump Campaign. That seems obvious, since Trump is well known for failing to pay for services rendered. The real question is whether Cohen EXPECTED to be paid back. The answer is apparently "yes." The Wall Street Journal reported that Cohen griped shortly after the election that he hadn’t been reimbursed by Trump for making payouts to Clifford.

When he told the world that he was never reimbursed, Cohen hoped people would assume that he acted completely on his own, without any expectation of repayment. In implying that, Cohen was misdirecting us like a stage magician, but it does appear that he told the absolute truth. He was never reimbursed, just like many people who have done work for Trump.
