He was quite loved in Missouri. You may remember that he was a VP candidate for about two weeks in 1972 before he was branded a crazy man because of some voluntary hospitalizations and electric shock treatments. Of course, this was a comedy writer's dream, and he was the official late-night punch line, kind of the Britney Spears of his own 15 minutes, until he finally withdrew in favor of Shriver.
