He had two doubles, raising his career total to 660. That is the most of any right handed hitter in history! (And the sixth highest total overall.)The first double was his career 1000th extra base hit, making him the 27th player to reach that level. He now has 3007 hits, tied for 25th of all time with Al Kaline.
Is Biggio destined for the Hall of Fame? Yes, I suppose so. Compare him to HOFer Paul Molitor. In Molly's career he used up 7856 outs (unsuccessful at bats, plus caught stealing, plus double plays), and accumulated 6499 bases (total bases, plus walks, plus HBP, plus stolen bases). The comparable numbers for Biggio? 7923 outs, 6485 bases. They are virtually the same player! Molly's slight edge on offense is offset by the fact that Biggio was a regular at three difficult skill positions (C, 2B, CF), while Molly spent close to half of his career as a DH. Neither man ever won an MVP, but each of them had two "top five" finishes in the balloting. My conclusion is that Biggio belongs if Molly does, and I can't think of a single good reason why Molly doesn't.
