Richard Kiley, as Don Quijote, sings the Impossible Dream

It was one of the greatest performances in musical theater history. Although Kiley was a terrific singer who introduced both Stranger in Paradise and The Impossible Dream to theater audiences, and was also a great stage actor, he never really caught on as a film actor, and his best TV work was in voice-overs. Most of the times when his face could be seen, he'd be on crime shows as a seedy DA, or in dramas as a neglectful father, or on medical shows as a difficult, humorless doctor. His TV roles were always professional and competent, but rarely memorable. But on stage ... the man was captivating.
