David Letterman Apologizes to Sarah Palin Again

He got it exactly right this time. He explained that he got the two daughters confused and therefore didn't understand the context which caused his jokes to be tasteless. I think he is telling the truth about that. It seems clear that he thought he was making jokes about Bristol Palin, not Willow, since the jokes would really make no sense if they were not about Bristol. In context, however, his joke about Palin's daughter getting knocked up by A-Rod during the 7th inning stretch had to be about Willow, since she was the only daughter at the game. D.L. screwed up, and he admitted it. I hope Palin is gracious and smart enough to realize how the confusion occurred.

To me, the great shame of the incident was the defense of Letterman by the liberal community over the weekend, which proved they are no smarter or more principled than the conservatives they like to ridicule. Letterman was wrong - 100% wrong - and that would have been completely obvious to anyone who had examined the situation even superficially. He didn't mean to make tasteless statutory rape jokes about a 14-year-old kid, but the fact of the matter is that it did come out that way. So why were the libs jumping to his defense? That's also obvious. They simply made the knee-jerk assumption that Palin was wrong without ever considering the matter. I suppose I can see why. God knows Palin's statements are consistently ignorant and can usually be safely ignored, but she was right this time, and Letterman was ultimately a gentleman enough to admit it.
