ROTTEN TOMATOES: Opening This Week

ROTTEN TOMATOES: Movies Opening This Week

Good week to catch up on your reading. (Or go see last week's Zombieland, which is great fun, especially Bill Murray's brief appearance!) The only wide release this week is Couples Retreat, a new Vince Vaughn ... er ... comedy. It has been widely dissed by critics. It is a PG-13 film about an inherently R-rated topic, so it is bound to disappoint everyone. (10% positive reviews, 3000 theaters.) Typical comments:

  • "A comedy without any identifiable humor. Retreat is dreadful."
  • "It contains little comedy." (Ebert)
  • "Not funny."
  • "Has no redeeming qualities whatsoever, and makes extra effort to insult its audience whenever possible."
  • "Couples Retreat is essentially Vaughn and Favreau's baby, and it is absolutely, inexcusably terrible."
  • "The scenery makes you want to be somewhere other than a movie theater, and the movie has the same effect."
  • "This star-studded but startlingly drab 'comedy' is the kind of terrible trip you pray will be over long before it’s time to go home."
  • "If you feel like a date movie with a little romance, big laughs, witty dialogue, appealing characters and a spectacular location, this is NOT it... [It's an] embarrassment and an insult to audiences who might be conned into thinking it's escapist fun.
