Its 100% formulaic bullshit this week.
There are four additional films in wide release this week, but only three are new. The other is the 3D re-release of The Phantom Menace, which is chronologically the first part of the Star Wars saga. It's expected to gross about $20 million in 2700 theaters. It received 59% positive reviews, higher than the score earned by any of the new films this week. That's when you know it's a bad week - when Jar-Jar is your best choice.
First place, with some $40M in 3000 theaters, is expected to go to The Vow, which sounds like pretty much the exact same movie as The Notebook (the ol' "beloved wife can't remember me" gag), except with a different title. That and a PG-13 rating make it a good Valentine's Day Weekend film, I suppose, especially for those who can't remember The Notebook because they have the same memory problems as the characters in these films. 32% positive reviews; 2.5/4 from Ebert.
Second place should go to The Safe House, which is expected to gross about $30 million in 3100 theaters. Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds star in this R-rated action-thriller. Washington plays the most dangerous renegade from the CIA, who comes back onto the grid after a decade on the run. You know, pretty much the same plot as every other Denzel Washington movie. 52% positive reviews. I couldn't find an Ebert review.
The other new release is the one which will be in the most theaters (3400 or so), but is expected to finish with the lowest gross ($18M, give or take). It's Journey 2: Mysterious Island, the family-oriented PG follow-up to the 2008 film Journey to the Center of the Earth. 45% positive reviews; 2.5 stars from Ebert.
