A showcase of mediocrity, venality & vanity unbound.., sigh. From George Washington, Ben Franklin, Twain, Georgia O'Keefe, Mary Cassatt to this - how we've slid down.
I kept thinking that our fascination with their shallow, unproductive lives would end, but it has been years now, and I have clearly been proven wrong. I don't give a fig whether they exist or what they do with that existence, but I definitely get depressed when I realize how many people continue to follow and therefore enrich them.
I suppose Mencken was correct when he wrote, "No one in this world, so far as I know— and I have researched the records for years, and employed agents to help me — has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people. Nor has anyone ever lost public office thereby." (Let's hope the last sentence is wrong, or President Trump represents the future.)
