I thought I was pretty well up on the constitution, but I was not aware of this loophole in the 13th Amendment:
"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude,
except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States."
In other words, once a person has been convicted of a crime, you may use slavery as a means of punishment. Until now, I never really considered the implications of that.
