Pacino's acting in his early movies like The Godfather was brilliantly understated, but even though he got his start as a theater actor, I think his problem is that he decided at some time to transfer that style of acting into his film acting.
In theater acting, the actor tries to be as loud and as big as possible to be seen by the entire audience. I think it's fairly obvious for some reason Pacino thought that would be interesting to do in films.
Pacino has longed deserved a Rassie for overacting.

Didn't he do some Shakespeare 4th wall breaking movie about exactly that at one point?
