Summer begins. Well, there are only two films to look at this week. I guess you know that one of them involves a certain wall-crawling, web-slinging and somewhat neurotic superhero. Warrior thinks that picture will take in about $129 million. The other one is the thrice-delayed Lucky You, a poker movie directed by Curtis Hanson starring Drew Barrymore and Eric Bana, and featuring our ol' buddy Silver Dollar Sam O'Connor in the pivotal role of "old man." Aside from routine stuff like "I'm all in," Sammy has one big emotion-laden line - "Come on, nine." (Assuming his lines made it into the final cut, which they should since he was in the trailers!) Hey, one line still beats the piss out of sitting here writing about it!
The Warrior thinks Lucky You will take in about $7 million. The film was supposed to come out last spring, then last October, then March 31st, and finally this week opposite Spider-Man. Why was it delayed so many times? Nobody's talkin'. There is not one single review online anywhere. It seems that nobody has seen the final cut of this film. It may be an OK film, because Curtis Hanson is an excellent filmmaker, but the delays and the lack of screenings are not exactly the typical harbingers of artistic achievement or blockbuster-level success.
Opening against Spidey may actually prove to be a blessing. Lots of people are headed to the theaters this weekend, and some of them may not be interested in the lines and the jam-packed rows and may prefer to watch Lucky You in the peaceful Zen-like solitude it will surely afford. Less ironically, I may add that Lucky You may attract a different demographic from Spidey, but nobody knows exactly what its demographic is. Each trailer has had a different tone. Is it a drama? A comedy? A romantic comedy? As I wrote earlier, nobody's talkin'.
