Austin, Texas (78701) Conditions & Forecast : Weather Underground

Happy Thanksgiving
It's normal for winter to come upon us quite suddenly in Texas. I can remember playing in a softball tournament in mid-September back in the eighties when it was 100 degrees. During the night games that same day the temperature was in the thirties. Before that day: summer, with the A/C running all day. After: winter, with the heat running all day. The change is not always that dramatic, but it was again this year, except that it happened two months later, perhaps because summer was also two months late this year.

I played some beach volleyball yesterday afternoon. It was 89 degrees, and so damned hot in the direct sun that I took off my shirt. About two in the afternoon I felt the gentle breeze change and start to blow in from the north. I wouldn't even have noticed it if I had been just walking around, but these sorts of things can be critical if you play outdoor volleyball.

That sort of wind shift this time of year is always a sign that something is up. I went out to get a newspaper this morning, and it was 35 degrees out with a fierce 20MPH wind from the north. A Blue Norther blew in and Thanksgiving brought us winter in typical Texas fashion, without the cushion of autumn.

Hope you are all having a great time with your families today.
