The other major effect of the loss by the #1 team is to place West Virginia back into the national title picture. Assuming they can beat Connecticut, the Mountaineers should finish the season #2, no matter what happens in the Kansas/Missouri game. Since West Virginia is rated above Missouri now in the coaches' poll, even #1 is possible if Missouri beats Kansas. (I doubt it. I suppose the Kansas/Missouri winner will be #1)Even if West Virginia gets through U Conn, they have one more game next week.
Of the top three teams (excluding LSU), not one of them has beaten an opponent rated in the top 20 at the time of the game.
In other words, there is no convincing choice for the top slot this year.
- Missouri has played only #6 (at the time) Oklahoma, and they lost by 10.
- West Virginia has only played #18 South Florida, and they lost by 8 ... and South Florida has since fallen out of the rankings altogether.
- Kansas has not played a top 20 team.
