More "Justice League" casting news.

I haven't read comics in a long time, but exactly why did the Justice League recruit Batman? I mean, he's a really good detective who works out a lot. How does he help out when the universe is threatened by a cataclysm? Does he bring Superman coffee? Does he make travel arrangements? Does he keep their official blog?
