The bad news: the weekend was no better than the past two. The good news: that's an improvement relative to last year. This week was actually 11% better than last year's comp, and that broke a string of deficits. The four new films provided no great surprises. Ben Stein's film did better than expected by making the top ten, but its 33% margin over the predictions sounds deceptively impressive because it is based on small absolute numbers. It was expected to do 2.4 million and beat that by less than a million.
Within the carry-over films, the only minor surprise was the unexpectedly precipitous decline from Street Kings, which folded like a cheap accordion (down 68% from last week).
