Polar Bears declared a threatened species - although there are more of them now than ever before.
I think I should point out here that the decision may well be a correct one. Although the polar bear population has increased over the past fifty years, that has happened because of hunting restrictions. In the past, hunting had a bigger impact on the PB population than habitat change. The great majority of scientists seem to agree that the number of PBs will decrease substantially in the future because their habitat is disappearing.

However, the dissenting voices are extremely significant. The governments of Nunavut and the Northwest Territories say "not so." Why is their opinion so significant? Because Nunavut alone has 2/3 of the world's PBs!

Canada's take on the U.S. decision.
