ESPN - Prior to have season-ending surgery on troublesome right shoulder - MLB

Mark Prior to have his annual season-ending surgery ...

This year it occurred before he threw a pitch.

My heart goes out to the guy because these last few years have been frustrating, but even if he never returns, the record books still show that he was 18-6 with a 2.43 ERA (and batted .250 as well!) in his only full season in the majors. In that post-season, he pitched a complete game two-hitter to defeat Greg Maddux in the first round of the playoffs. In the NLCS he beat the Marlins in game two, and almost put the Cubs into the Series in game six. With the Cubs ahead 3-2 in games, Prior blanked the Marlins for seven and a third innings while the Cubs built a 3-0 lead. Unfortunately, the eighth inning didn't work out well. That was the famous Bartman Game. The Marlins went on to win games six and seven.
