The only four guys ahead of him are Ruth, Aaron, Bonds and Mays. He's 38 years old (tempus fugit) and he needs 50 to pass Mays, so maybe ... maybe not. He will need to pass Mays to stay in the top five because A-Rod already has 553 and is only 32 years old. Pujols is the only other top five candidate, and he's far off the pace with 316 dingers at age 28.Others who might pass The Kid? Nobody really knows how much gas Manny has left in the tank at age 36, but he has 526 homers as of now. Two months ago I thought he was near the end of the line, but now he's hitting like Babe Ruth. In 48 games with the Dodgers, he has hit .399 with 16 homers.
Jim Thome is a year older than Manny and has 14 more four-baggers. If you think back, Manny and Thome were teammates in Cleveland, and had one year when they knocked in more than 270 runs between them. The Indians had a good team that year, winning 97 games with Roberto Alomar, Richie Sexson, and David Justice adding to one of the greatest hitting attacks in baseball history - 1000+ runs. (The 1927 Yankees scored "only" 975!) Those Indians had a 2-0 playoff lead against the Bosox when their pitching collapsed totally. They dropped three in a row in which the Sox scored 9, 23, and 12.
