Daily Box Office for Friday, February 27, 2009

The Jonas Brothers opened much softer than anticipated. The experts predicted that it would gross in the low thirties, but it started with a Friday below $5 million. That was good enough to take the #1 spot, but just barely.

The martial arts film, Street Fighter, with 0% positive reviews, limped into sixth. Who the hell persuaded people to release that movie theatrically? If you need an incredible salesman, hire that guy!

The director of Street Fighter is Andrez Bartkowiak, a perfect illustration of the Peter Principle. He was one of the best cinematographers in H-Wood for two decades, having been the DP on Speed, The Devil's Advocate, The Verdict, Prince of the City, Falling Down, Thirteen Days, Terms of Endearment, Prizzi's Honor, and many other worthy projects. Then he got the promotion to director, whereupon he apparently lost all sense of quality, and has churned out a steady stream of utter crap, of which not a single one has reached 6.0 at IMDb.
