It was an excellent weekend, 44% higher than last year's comp. Three of the four new releases performed better than expected, and the top four carry-overs performed better than expected, with none of the latter dropping more than 21% from last week.Slumdog Millionaire continued to establish an impressive track record, and barely dropped from last week. It is now at $77 million and seems sure to reach triple figures (or should I say nine figures). Gran Torino dropped only 10%, and has now reached $120m.
Aniston's movie won the weekend, but the big winner was Coraline, which rode 87% positive reviews to a surprising third-place finish, some 60% over its expected level.
The only blight on the weekend was the ignoble performance of The Pink Panther 2, which was not much more popular with audiences than it was with critics.
