Here are two sets of stats. One belongs to Pujols, as of now. The other is Joe DiMaggio's lifetime total.
BA - OBP - SLG - 2B - HR
- .325 - .398 - .579 - 389 - 361
- .334 - .427 - .629 - 384 - 366
In other words, 29-year-old Pujols has already assembled the same numbers as a Hall of Famer. And we're not talking about Joe Tinker or Sunny Jim Bottomley, but a bona fide A-list Hall of Famer who is considered one of the greatest players in history.By the way, in the comparison above, Pujols' numbers are the BETTER ones. To be fair, DiMaggio's 131 triples should be added to the comparison (Pujols has only 14), but that is more than balanced out by the fact that Pujols has accomplished in 5100 at-bats what took DiMaggio 6800. To get down to DiMaggio's production levels on doubles and homers, he can basically hit none for the next three full years, and even then he'd still be dead even with 750 (doubles plus homers)!
When the lifetime OPS of every player is adjusted for offensive context, Pujols is #6 of all time. The only guys above him are Ruth, Gehrig, Williams, Hornsby and Bonds. (He's actually tied for sixth with Mantle.) Pretty good company.
