The two new films took in some $15 million more than expected, and that was enough to carry the box office to a double digit percentage lift over last year.Couples Retreat plowed right through the harsh reviews and broke the all-time record for Columbus Day weekend with $35 million.
An even greater surprise was the phenomenal $7 million gtossed by Paranormal Activity, a no-budget film which was only in 160 theaters. That just about doubled the previous record for the best weekend by a film in fewer than 200 theaters. It did so well that Paramount will roll it out nationwide on Friday.
