The Rite took first, but with a paltry $15m. The Mechanic finished either third or fourth (according to the estimates, it tied the Green Hornet for third.)The King's Speech increased 40% over last week, and has now finished in the top twenty for ten consecutive weekends, and in the top ten for five weekends in a row. You all know that it has been a critical favorite, but it's obvious that theatergoers also like it. The original North American plan, which assumed it was for an arthouse audience, was to release it in about 700 theaters. I mentioned a few times in December that I wanted to see it but it was NOT playing in a theater near me. As time went on, it gained so much traction that it is now in 2500+ theaters, has grossed $72 million, and shows no signs of slowing down.
Amazing! I can remember when I praised Colin Firth for his credible interpretation of Valmont, and everyone asked me "Who the hell is Colin Firth?"
