Wisconsin loses; Oklahoma loses to unranked Texas Tech at home

Wisconsin loses; Oklahoma loses at home to unranked Texas Tech

Oklahoma's loss is not as big an upset as it sounds like.

First of all, Texas Tech should have been rated, and they will be now. They had only two losses, both tight losses to ranked teams, including one to undefeated Kansas State.

Second, Texas Tech has one of the best offenses, if not the best, in the country. In their two LOSSES - to those ranked teams - they scored 34 and 40. They simply scored their usual 41 against Oklahoma as well.

But it's still an upset. Tech's defense is suspect and Oklahoma was expected to go through it like crap through a goose. They did just that in the second half, but they couldn't overcome a pathetic first half which left them trailing 24-7. LSU will now be first in both of the human polls.

Wisconsin lost on a Hail Mary play, but if they were really national championship material, they wouldn't have been in that situation in the first place. For what it's worth, the computer rankings are not impressed with any Big Ten teams.

Boise St. barely beat Air Force. Their #5 ranking is highly suspect, so I can't see them moving up to take Oklahoma's slot in the top four. I think Clemson will reach #4. #5 might be Boise or it might be Stanford, who handed a 65-21 shellacking to 25th-rated Washington.

Oregon (#3 pre-season) is heading back up, possibly as high as 7th, after their 45-2 victory. Their only loss of the year was to top-ranked LSU, and they made that a game by scoring 27 against LSU's vaunted defense.

Kansas State is still undefeated, but they now face four consecutive ranked opponents. If they somehow manage to win all four of those, they could still make the national championship game against either LSU or Alabama. That's unlikely, but it is possible. The computer systems like Kansas State, having ranked them 7th before yesterday's games. This week they may go as high as 5th on the computer portion of the BCS standings, but they just don't get much love in the human polls.
