21 Jump Street turned in some solid numbers. At $35 million, it performed better than expected. That was good enough for first place, and impressive enough to equal the next two films added together. The CinemaScore was an A from audience members under 25, and the film pulled in a surprisingly high percentage of female viewers (47% of the audience), indicating that it will continue to perform fairly well as a date movie which will please both sexes.
Obscure record o' the day: "21 Jump Street opened to an estimated $35 million from 3,121 locations. That tops Jonah Hill's Superbad ($33.05 million) for highest opening ever for a comedy set in high school."
Will Ferrell's all-Spanish movie finished 9th overall and 3rd in the "per theater" category. Those results were not bad at all, considering that it reached only 382 theaters. It beat last week's Silent House, which was in nearly six times as many theaters. 68% of its viewers were Hispanic, and about half of those were women, so Casa de mi Padre will be expanded to 25-30 additional markets where the Hispanic population is significant.
Jeff, Who Lives at Home was a non-starter, grossing less than a million dollars.
John Carter fell like a rock, losing 55% of last week's gross.
