If you're really into these books and this series, the real story is who is missing. Nobody has been chosen to play Ramsay Snow, which has led to speculation that he may have been written out of the series, although he was mentioned a few times in season two. That would be a bold change from the book to the screen because Ramsay is a major character in the middle of the saga, and is necessary to Theon Greyjoy's future storyline. Ramsay should make a fascinating character for the series, in that he's uncommonly cruel even by the standards of their universe. His sadism makes the vicious young king look like a choir boy.
Reflecting the character's absence from the series, the one key scene which Ramsay would have dominated in season two, the burning of Winterfell and kidnapping of Theon Greyjoy, was presented as if Ramsey had not been involved. Actually, we're not sure whether he was involved. He might have been an unseen mastermind, since the events were presented ambiguously in order to create one of the elements of the season-ending cliffhanger.
POSSIBLE SPOILER: In the books Theon was secretly in league with Ramsay and actually opened the gates to Winterfell. This was (or seems to have been) altered significantly in the series.

It was mentioned in interviews that book 3 will be split into more than one season, as will most books going forward. GRRM just covers too much content for the screenwriters to do it all justice in one season. It may be that Ramsay Bolton appears in season 4, or he just hasn't been cast yet...
ReplyDeleteOr the writers just combined Ramsay and Roose into the same character and you'll see Roose take a much more sinister tone in the HBO adaptation. I'm sure GRRM will probably elaborate on it as shooting gets underway.
