This week's new movies (opening 8/29 and 8/31)

New Movies In Theaters This Week: Rotten Tomatoes
Lawless (opened Wednesday) is an R-rated crime drama with a topless scene from an anonymous woman and a dark T&A scene from Jessica Chastain. 2600 theaters; 65% positive reviews; predicted gross: about $11 million, good for second place. It finished #1 on Wednesday.

The Possession is a PG-13 ghost story ... er ... "based on a true story" - in much the same way that my life is based on Brad Pitt's. It features the ever-popular "unspeakable" evil, which means that it must also be "untypeable," thus saving me much exposition. 2700 theaters; 30% positive reviews; predicted gross: $15 million, enough for the weekend championship!

The Oogieloves (opened Wednesday) is a gritty hard-R noir set in the brothels of Bangkok. Nah, I'm just fuckin' witcha. It's just what it sounds like, some G-rated kiddie crap. The Oogieloves are named Goobie, Zoozie and Toofie. Do you need to know more? 2100 theaters; 38% positive reviews. It is not expected to perform well over the weekend and may miss the top ten. Why open a kiddie film on a Wednesday after school starts? Beats me. Whatever the theory was, it was wrong. It opened in 17th place, taking in a sparkling $47 per theater.
