New Movies In Theaters May 31 - Rotten Tomatoes

New Movies In Theaters May 31 - Rotten Tomatoes
There are two new films in wide release this week, but it appears that neither is much good.

Will Smith's post-apocalyptic After Earth (PG-13; 3400 theaters)is pulling only 13% positive reviews. RT's summary: "After Earth is a dull, ploddingly paced exercise in sentimental sci-fi -- and the latest setback for director M. Night Shyamalan's once-promising career."

Now You See Me (PG-13, 2900 theaters) sounds interesting: a group of skilled illusionists team up to pull off some daring heists. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to live up to its promise. The reviews have been tepid (42% positive), and RT's summary says: "Now You See Me's thinly sketched characters and scattered plot rely on directorial sleight of hand to distract audiences -- and director Louis Leterrier lacks sufficient cinematic prestidigitation to pull it off in the final act." Most of the individual critics commented that the ending is lame.

After Earth will probably not be able to take the top box office spot from Fast 6, which should hold about $40 million from last week. Now You See Me may finish third, but it will be a distant third with a gross in the neighborhood of $20M.
