Here's how I see it:
No matter how bad or good a film is, it would be better with Alice Eve in her underpants.
Name a film - any era, any type, and quality: Lilies of the Field. Lawrence of Arabia. Star Wars. The Sound of Music. The Seventh Seal. My Dinner With Andre. The Brain From Planet Arous. Citizen Kane. The Seventh Seal. Now add a scene with Alice Eve in her underwear. The great movies are even better, and the bad movies aren't as bad. Hell, Alice Eve in a wet transparent shirt even got me to watch a couple of minutes of Sex and the City 2, and that might be the worst movie ever made.
Even if you are making a cartoon, you can work Alice into the pre-credits intro. You shouldn't begin our viewing experience with the Statue of Liberty or some boring mountains or a mangy lion roaring, but with a smiling Alice Eve in her underpants.
Therefore, that writer is apologizing for trying to make his film better. This makes no sense to me. Every filmmaker should want to make his/her films as good as they can possibly be. Right?

The only thing he should really apologize for is being lazy and ripping off a classic Trek film rather than coming up with something original.
