"After Earth landed with a major thud on opening weekend, grossing just $27 million and opening in third place with a tepid B CinemaScore." (Not to mention a pathetic 12% positive reviews.)
That's right, third place. After Earth not only lost to Fast 6, but it lost to the magician movie! Granted, the magician movie performed better than expected, but After Earth was expected to come close to doubling Now You See Me. Analysts thought After Earth would gross in the $35M range, compared to about $20M for Now You See Me, which proved much more appealing to audiences (A- Cinemascore) than it had to critics (43% positive reviews).
"(Fun fact: between Fast & Furious 6, Pain & Gain, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and Snitch, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson has had a film in the Top 10 every weekend since February 22.)"
