It will be, as they say in the biz, a soft weekend. There are two films in wide release this week:
The Internship is a PG-13 comedy starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson as two guys who talk their way into Google internships although they are a bit long in the tooth compared to their peers. (34% positive reviews; 3300 theaters).
The Purge is an R-rated thriller (43% positive reviews; 2500 theaters). "A speculative thriller that follows one family over the course of a single night, four people will be tested to see how far they will go to protect themselves when the vicious outside world breaks into their home. In an America wracked by crime and overcrowded prisons, the government has sanctioned an annual 12-hour period in which any and all criminal activity-including murder-becomes legal." Many critics pointed out that it's almost as dumb as it sounds.
These two films should finish 1-2, with each in the neighborhood of $20M.
