The only contest which qualified for Big Game status was a 49-42 shoot-out between #1 Alabama and #6 Texas A&M. The Aggies don't have much D. They rank 4th in the nation in offense and 108th in defense. They had allowed 30 points per game to weak teams in their first two games, so they could not have been surprised when Alabama scored 49. The only question was whether their vaunted offense could score even more than their defense would allow. They couldn't. Johnny Football passed for 464 yards, but he made some poor decisions that led to two interceptions and another pass that could easily have been a third pick, an alley-oop into a cluster of jerseys. Give the A&M offense its due, however, because the 42 points allowed by Alabama is the most allowed by the Crimson Tide in a win in school history.
A&M was the only team among the top 19 to drop a game.
All of the other noteworthy items involve the unexpected weakness of the Big 10.
#20 Wisconsin lost to Arizona State.
#24 Nebraska blew a 21-3 lead in spectacular fashion as #16 UCLA scored 38 unanswered points.
#11 Michigan won, but it was still humiliating. They were losing with four minutes to play in a game in which they were five touchdown favorites at home, and they barely fought off a last minute loss with a goal-line stand. Their opponents, the mighty Akron Zips, were supposed to be pushovers. They are coming off three consecutive one-win seasons, and have not won a road game in the past five years! (The Zips? That's really what they are called. You are a heavy-duty fan if you knew that.)
