Olympic Medal count

Olympic Medal count
Russia surged at the end to take command of both major categories (most medals; most golds), while the USA took second place in the overall medal count and fourth place in the race for the gold. The overall medal count had been very hotly contested between five contenders (Russia, Canada, Norway, Netherlands, USA) until the last two days, when Russia pulled well ahead. In addition to winning the most golds, Russia also won the most silvers!

Here are the changes in the overall medal totals of seven strong countries from the Vancouver games to Sochi (Vancouver total listed first)

Canada 26-25
Germany 30-19
Norway 23-26
USA 37-28
Netherlands 8-24
Russia 15-33
Austria 16-17

As you can see, Germany and the USA had the sharpest declines, while Russia improved dramatically and The Netherlands emerged as a new powerhouse. The Netherlands tripled its disappointing Vancouver total, while Russia more than doubled up on home snow and ice.
