He was one of my favorites and arguably the best character actor in the business. (And from my home town!)

"Police officials have said that Hoffman was found in his bathroom with a needle in his arm. Last summer, Hoffman checked himself into rehab after becoming addicted to heroin." Hoffman first entered rehab for drug and alcohol addiction when he was 22. That was 24 years ago.
