Box office report: 'Neighbors' beats 'Spider-Man 2' with $51M haul

Box office report: 'Neighbors' beats 'Spider-Man 2' with $51M haul

That was a tremendous opening. It's 25-30% better than expected, and is eleventh of all time among R-rated films. That makes it fourth among R-rated comedies, if you consider Sex and the City a comedy. It beat such notable comedies as The Hangover, American Pie 2 and Jackass 3D.

Spidey held up about as expected, grossing $37 million.

Legends of Oz totally tanked, taking in only $3.7 million in 2575 theaters. That's the 7th-worst opening in history for a film in 2500 or more theaters, and the worst in that group since the nuclear bomb chick-flick Won't Back Down in September of 2012 (which is the worst of all time).

Mom's Night Out took in an insignificant $4.2 million, but that wasn't a complete failure, because it was in only a thousand theaters.
