Inside Movies (link above) is predicting a 4-way dogfight for the top spot between the films mentioned above. The Weekend Warrior agrees. The four films are each expected to gross between $24M and $34M.
None of the three new films have been critical favorites. Per RT, here are the percentages of positive reviews, followed by the theater counts:
The Purge: Anarchy - 49%, 2800 theaters. Sequel to The Purge.
Planes: Fire and Rescue - 47%, 3800 theaters. Latest in the animated series.
Sex Tape - 13%, 3000 theaters. R-rated shenanigans featuring Cameron Diaz and Jason Segal. Mr Skin wrote: "It looks as though this is indeed the film in which Cameron Diaz makes her nude debut! Although we only get to see some clear shots of her butt at both the very beginning of the movie and again at the 20-minute mark, there is some hot see-through action when she wears a sheer white top, and some side boob with a possible nip slip also at the 20-minute mark!"
Also out in national distribution this week, but not in saturation distribution: Persecuted (0% positive reviews, 736 theaters). It's a movie targeting conservative Christians: "Persecuted depicts evangelist John Luther as the last obstacle in the way of sweeping religious reform. When a Senator frames Luther for the murder of an innocent teenage girl, an unprecedented era of persecution is unleashed. An evangelist turned fugitive, Luther's mission brings him face-to-face with the coming storm of persecution that will threaten the entire Christian community in America. "
