Movies new in theaters this week - Rotten Tomatoes

Movies new in theaters this week - Rotten Tomatoes

There is only one new film in wide release (3300 theaters) this week, a PG-13 effort called The Longest Ride.

Mr. Gene Rayburn, I can name that song in two words: Nicholas Sparks.

That 37% figure which is supposed to represent the percentage of positive reviews probably should be much closer to zero. Here are some of the allegedly POSITIVE reviews, aka "Fresh Tomatoes"

"Tillman doesn't quite elevate the maudlin material into serious drama."

"Spoon-fed entertainment"

(I didn't make these up. Those are actually from the good reviews.)

My favorite review was the half-star assigned by Matt Pais of Red Eye:

"Insulting to immigrants, minorities, soldiers and horses, 'The Longest Ride' asks women to make the largest sacrifices, and a character actually thinks he's profound by saying, “This thing called life ...” The world of bull riding seemingly would generate some heat. But “The Longest Ride” is as sexy as a rodeo clown and much slower."

The film is expected to gross in the mid-teens, so it will come nowhere near the weekend championship, which should go again to Furious 7 with a gross in the 50s or 60s. It is possible that The Longest Ride could edge out Home for second place, but it's more likely that it will finish third.
