It's not a great week for new openings, unless you need a place to take your little ones.
Minions (54% positive reviews) is a PG spin-off from the Despicable Me franchise.Box office: Minions is the power entry. It is expected to dominate the weekend with a gross in the neighborhood of $100 million. The other two are also-rans. The Gallows should be just north of $10M, which will be enough to satisfy the producers of this no-name, no-budget project. As for Self/Less, perhaps it's time for Ryan Reynolds to make another Van Wilder movie.
Self/Less (22%) is a high-concept PG-13 Sci-Fi thriller about a wealthy man, old and sick, who pays to have his consciousness transferred into a healthy young body. Unfortunately for the investors, that young body belongs to Ryan Reynolds, whose box office glitter has been oft tarnished. The bad reviews won't help either.
The Gallows (14%) is an R-rated (no nudity) horror film in the "found footage" sub-genre. "Twenty years after a deadly freak accident at a high school play, a misguided attempt to re-stage the play and honor the student proves that some things are better left in the past."
