Reader's comment:
No, on second thought, I'm sure the reason Playboy is failing is because readers are tired of looking at hot, naked women. Just like we all got sick of the original formula for Coke. It has nothing to do with the hectoring, leftwing, PC SJW mentality that's infested it so much you'd think Hillary Clinton was editing it. On one page, they show you a naked woman, on the next, they try to shame you for having enough testosterone to enjoy looking at her. I think they've forgotten who their target audience is. It's not Pajama Boy from the Obamacare ad. Aside from the occasional good feature, like last month's history of "Manos: The Hands of Fate," Playboy has become MSNBC, only with women you'd actually want to see naked. Guess we're lucky they didn't decide to keep the nudity, only with centerfolds of Rachel Maddow and Lena Dunham.
The excuse that they can't compete with all the naked women on the Internet is ridiculous. Why doesn't Starbucks stop serving coffee? After all, you can get a cup of coffee anywhere. Playboy was the Starbucks of nudity: the gold standard that meant the most beautiful models, the best lighting, the top photographers, etc. Not photos snapped up someone's skirt at Walmart with a cell phone. When a celebrity decided to "pose for Playboy," that had a meaning in pop culture beyond getting caught in an embarrassing paparazzi nip-slip.
My subscription is running out next month. I've been debating letting it go for awhile because of the editorial content. They also want a hefty $44 for one year, so it's not just because of the nudity decision. But it does seem like a perfect time to jump off the train. Bet a lot of other longtime subscribers will be joining me.
Scoop's comment:
I look at it from a very different angle. I was surprised to hear they were removing nudity from their print edition because I had no idea they were still publishing a print edition. I can't remember the last time I bought a magazine. I can remember that they have magazine racks at the airport, but I never look at them. About three months ago, a girlfriend of mine bought a copy of MAD because ... something about Harry Potter. I don't remember the details. I was shocked to see that they are still publishing that one as well. I was going to make a joke about it by comparing it to The Saturday Evening Post, but an internet search proved that you can still get that as well. As far as I know, McClure's magazine is unavailable.
